This Fourth of July, thousands will head to Coney Island to cheer on the world’s top competitive eaters vying for a chance to become a legend at Nathan’s Famous 2018 Hot Dog Eating Contest.
The contest is the culmination of a 16-event qualifying circuit conducted throughout the United States during the months of April, May and June. Each year, on July 4th, the top male and top female finishers from each qualifier gather on the corner of Surf and Stillwell Avenues to compete for the title, as they have since 1916. In 2017, Joey Chestnut set a Coney Island record on the Fourth of July when he ate 72 hot dog in 10 minutes and earn his tenth title. Miki Sudo of Las Vegas, NV, won the Ladies’ Title with 41 hotdogs in the same amount of time, her fourth straight victory. The prize in 2016 was $10,000 in cash for both men and women winners, with over $40,000 in prizes. As part of the event, Nathan’s Famous makes a donation of 100,000 hot dogs to the Food Bank for New York City.
