Carved, Cultured, and Cursed: The Early History of Butter

Elaine Khosrova will share the story of butter’s early origins and its metaphysical value in the world of ancient rites and rituals, including the sacred art of Tibetan butter sculpting. Detailing the arduous work of Tibetan monks who follow the long tradition of creating butter sculptures—known as tormas—for Buddhist ritual, Khosrova will also share videos of her travel in the Himalayas and other parts of Asia to document traditional butter making.
Elaine Khosrova is an independent writer who specializes in stories about food history and gastronomic culture. A former pastry chef and fellowship student at the Culinary Institute of America, she began her career in food publishing, working at several major food magazines and receiving a 2007 Gold Folio journalism award. In 2008, she founded Culture, a publication focusing on specialty cheese. Her book, Butter, A Rich History (Algonquin Books 2016), is the first publication to chronicle the life and times of this beloved fat.
A reception will precede the talk with wine and butter confections, and exhibits of Tibet House will be open for viewing.
